The Gabriel García Márquez Fellowship in Cultural Journalism is divided into two modules: film and popular culture. All modules were coordinated by the FNPI master lecturer Héctor Feliciano and the American journalist Jonathan Levi. In addition, there were two expert guest lecturers—both national and international—who participated in each module.

A total of fifteen journalists participated in this nine-day fellowship. First they visited Aracataca together with the master lecturers and expert guest lecturer for popular culture, Alberto Salcedo Ramos. Then they worked through the Cartagena Film Festival (FICCI), using it as a laboratory, so to speak, and combining it with discussion and reflection sessions guided by master lecturers A.O. Scott and Fernanda Solórzano, all with the goal of producing works on the festival’s screenings, activities, and celebrities.

Popular Culture

This module was held March 12-13, 2014 in Aracataca, Magdalena, a village on Colombia’s Caribbean where Gabriel García Márquez was born. His work is the inspiration for this training program, and on this visit the fellows were able to get to know the setting and identity of the village that inspired the Nobel Laureate’s writing.
